Ciao! 2019

Curatorial project

At some point all of Perth will find its way through Chicho. It’s a rite of passage.

What perhaps goes unseen, is the slew of local artists that find their way through our doors. Beyond being a purveyor of tasty treats, Chicho is a meeting place for Perth artists, performers & DJs.

This year Chicho is celebrating these unique flavours of Perth through the exhibition Ciao! Five local artists have been invited to respond to the experience, the site, or the flavours of Chicho. So enjoy a little taste of the Perth’s local art scene, through works by Alina Tang, Carly Lynch, Nikki Lundy, Joanna Sulkowski & Tim Meakins.

Alina Tang works across printmaking, floriography, and design projects which often take the forms of illustration, painting, and wall-works.Often brightly coloured and full of joy, her delicate and detailed works celebrate floral cultures, rituals of gift-giving, and small gentle gestures. She is currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Carly Lynch’s varied practice spans drawing to performance, as she considers the poetic potential for actions and materials to problematise the construction dominant histories. Often her works draw on personal memories and local events. as inspiration. Tea Towel Studies are a series of watercolour studies of tea towels, all of which are currently used within her Nonna’s domestic space. The patterns have been rendered softly and methodically, seeking to create a soothing visual experience and space for associated memories to surface.

Joanna Sulkowski is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in fashion & textile design. She works with installations and public interventions investigating themes of domesticity, space and habitation. Not What You Expected has been. developed as an extension of textbased work of the artist’s practice. The dialogue is ambiguous, yet still relatable to everyone, playing on micro and macro levels. A play on the grand gesture, the work can be read as highly personal and emotional, yet it retains a sense of humour, as the text displayed is not the usual ‘marry me’ or ‘I love you’ statements paraded in the public domain.

Predominately an installation Artist, Nikki Lundy also works with Sculpture, process painting, collage and printmaking. Lundy’s current practice involves an ongoing exploration and affinity for process, materiality and spatial relationships formulate an experience of space. Chrome Domes references elements of Chicho’s iconic architectural aesthetics while acting as an archive of spatial experiences amongst some of the unique public spaces in Northbridge.

Tim Meakins is a designer/illustrator and emerging visual artist. Meakins is the inhouse

designer for PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts) and for label/studio 823. Meakins recently co-founded the design studio TERMSOFSERVICE with fellow Designer Simran Singh. Tim’s practice revolves around human perception and connection.Quadruple Scoop is a work about an internal hunger to try and consume as many flavours as possible. The work is inspired by personal experience of over consumption.
