NUDE 博士。2018

I am looking for women to lend their hands in a group sewing circle developing an embroidered Qipao. This is an opportunity to engage in discussion on the contemporary place of women in China. In both Chinese and Western tradition embroidery has been a group activity; as much an opportunity to produce garments and decoration as it is to share and discuss. The garment will make use of QR codes. By using QR codes participants are invited to extend this discussion beyond this intimate circle and into the broader sphere.

As women’s positions as the head of the home are shifting, traditional skills such as needlework are being replaced by the value of modern education. How does the role of a woman get re-invented? How do we negotiate the conflicting aspirations of career and education with the traditional role of being a mother?

No sewing experience is necessary, only enthusiasm!

Dinner and drinks will be provided.

This sewing circle will form part of a three-month project titled Nûde 博士, which explores the misinterpretation of highly-educated women in China. This work will be exhibited in both Shanghai and Perth, Australia. All profits from the collaborative garment will be donated to EGRC (Educating Girls from Rural China). Participants in the project will receive a photobook documenting their contribution.
